Mobile is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Mobile County. It is located near the Gulf of Mexico, about halfway between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Pensacola, Florida. The population within the city limits was 195,111 as of 2015. The Mobile metropolitan statistical area is known as the “Bold City” for its entrepreneurship and wealth of historic sites found in this American port city.
In 1519, Spanish explorer Alonzo Álvarez de Pineda landed at a site on the Bay of Mobila (the name for Mobile Bay prior to other Europeans arriving) and he established a short-lived settlement called San Esteban de la Mobila. Although this name lives on in some places in Alabama, it was changed to Mobile when French settlers arrived in 1702 from La Louisiane (Louisiana), who also helped with the founding of nearby Biloxi, Mississippi.
The French were eager to gain access to the fertile soil and abundant timber of the Alabama region for their new colony in La Louisiane; they also wanted to establish trade with Native Americans who lived there before them. Their first settlement here was called Fort Louis de la Mobile (Fort Louis of Mobile).
