Greenwich, Connecticut, is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It is located on the west bank of the lower Connecticut River and is part of the Greater New York metropolitan area. The town’s population was 31,107 at the 2010 census.
The first European settlers in Greenwich were Puritans who established a church in 1640. Farmers and traders followed them. King Philip’s War in 1675 led to the death of half the townsfolk. General David Wooster garrisoned his troops here for three days during the American Revolution before attacking New York City during the Battle of Long Island (August 1776).
In 1777, George Washington celebrated New Year’s Eve with his wife Martha and friends John Parke Custis (the stepson of Martha Washington), Alexander Hamilton, Marquis de Lafayette, Lord Stirling, and Joseph Reed. In 1873, a piece of land on which there had been a house or tavern since 1641 was sold to Charles Schieren for $5 million; this piece was redeveloped into an exclusive residential estate called Round Hill Country Club in 1921.
Greenwich has an active community association that provides road maintenance and snow removal services.
