St. Augustine, Florida is a city in the United States. It is located on the Atlantic coast of northeast Florida, about 100 miles northeast of Miami. Founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and named for Saint Augustine of Hippo, the city is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement within U.S. borders.
The city served as the capital of Florida during its early years as an American territory, and was incorporated in 1887. The city’s old town has at least one structure from every major architectural style in America since its founding: Spanish Renaissance, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Federalist, Victorian and even Art Deco. St. Augustine is also distinguished by its location; it is the only major city in America which sits on a walled island with both the ocean on one side and a river (the Matanzas River) on another side.
In 1565 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed at what is now known as St. Augustine Beach with 600 soldiers and settlers to build a fort for Spain’s King Philip II to protect him from French attacks from Fort Caroline to the north (in modern Jacksonville).
