St. Petersburg is the largest city in Pinellas County, Florida and is located on the coast of Tampa Bay. The city’s population was 337,039 at the 2010 census, and the estimated population in 2014 was 337,623. It is a principal city of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which had a population of 2,783,281 in 2012 and 2,835,838 in 2013.

The St. Petersburg area has long been populated by Tocobaga Indians, who lived at the mouth of the nearby Tampa River for thousands of years. They were thought to be extinct until researchers found several living Tocobaga people in northern Florida in 1528.

During the Seminole Wars against the United States Army, Fort Foster was built across from Fort Dade. The village was incorporated as “St. Petersburg” on April 29, 1892, and its first mayor was W. C. Hoyt.

The city grew slowly over the next few decades as it became a major commercial fishing port, manufacturing center and transportation hub on Florida’s west coast.
