Venice, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census.
The city was founded by Harry Frank Guggenheim and his wife, Peggy. It is located on the mainland of Sarasota Bay in the southwest part of the county. It is connected to Nokomis by a causeway. The island’s name comes from its location on “the shores of Venice”. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1875 and built homes along the shores of the bay. In 1882, they established a post office and named it Venice.
When the post office opened, it had 38 residents; by 1900 there were around 400 people living in Venice. A small fishing village grew up near the original settlement and became known as Sunshine City after a railroad built south from Venice to Englewood in 1913-14 brought more visitors to the area. When this railroad was extended further south to Fort Myers Beach in 1916-17, Sunshine City’s population increased even more rapidly and there was a need for more services such as hotels and restaurants; so Venice incorporated as an independent town on February 12th, 1917 with over 700 residents at that time according to city records kept by Mary Elizabeth
