Duluth is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. It is a suburb of Atlanta. As of the 2010 census, Duluth had a population of 21,062. The city is located northeast of the center of Gwinnett County and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Duluth was named after Sister City Duluth, Minnesota.

The land for what would become Duluth was purchased from Native American tribes in 1821 by an agent for John Clark and Daniel Duluth, owners of the land at that time. Clark and Duluth sold the land to John Holland who laid out a town plan with streets and lots which he sold to settlers. In 1823 he renamed it “Duluth” after his brother Daniel’s hometown of Duluth, Minnesota.

In 1824 the first schoolhouse was built in Duluth on what is now Hickory Street. The town grew quickly due to its location at the crossroads of two major roads: Peachtree Road (which became Peachtree Street) and Old Wheat Road (later called Dallas Highway). In 1838 the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted to build both a courthouse and a jail in Duluth, which led to more people settling there.
