Hilo is a city in the state of Hawaii in the United States. It is located on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii, in the District of Hilo.
The population was 44,058 at the 2010 census. The population declined by 2.1% from 2007 to 2009, making it one of seven counties in Hawaii with an annual population decrease during that period.
Hilo is home to two universities: Hawaii Community College and the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, which offers undergraduate degrees through its main campus and graduate degrees through its West Hawai’i branch campus. Hilo’s main street is a historic site known as “Old Town”. It has been restored and has many shops and restaurants that serve local cuisine and souvenirs. Hilo attained city status in 1960.
Hilo is home to two museums: Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and Lyman House Memorial Museum. The latter museum houses a collection of decorative arts and crafts from early 19th century Hawaii, including kapa (tapa) cloth made by Queen Emma, wife of King Kamehameha IV. It also includes information about royal weddings including the wedding dress worn by Queen Kapiolani at her wedding with David Kalakaua.
