Kailua Kona is a census-designated place in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 7,870 at the 2000 census.

The town was named after Kailua Bay, which was named after the Hawaiian village of Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawai’i. The bay itself was named by Captain Cook when he arrived at the island on February 14, 1779. In the Hawaiian language, “Kai” means “sea” and “lua” means “two”, so technically the name refers to two seas.

In 1740, King Kalani’ōpu’u gave his lands in South Kona to his favorite wife Keōpūolani as a wedding gift. She was later buried at Honaunau. Keōua Nui lived at Pohukaina near Honaunau in what is now Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park).

For years, North Kona was ruled by chiefs who were related to the ali’i lords of Maui and Hawai’i Island. In ancient times, this area had been known as Hawaiki-nui-a-kea (Hawaiian: “Hawaiian Greater Water”).
