Waikoloa Village is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Waikoloa District of the Big Island of Hawaii. The population was 9,072 at the 2010 census, up from 7,848 at the 2000 census.
Waikoloa Village is located on Hualalai Road on the north shore of the island of Hawaii. It is an unincorporated area within Hawaiʻi County that is administered by the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Parks and Recreation. It has a post office with its own ZIP code, 96738; however, it does not have any official boundaries or government offices.
The name “Waikoloa” means “red water” in Hawaiian, referring to the pools near Hakalau stream that were created by lava flows from Mauna Kea. The area was once part of a large ranch owned by Robert Lewis Stevenson II called “Kahua Ranch,” which was known for its cattle operations and pineapple production. A few years after Stevenson’s death in 1892, his son-in-law Henry Perrine Baldwin took over Kahua Ranch and developed it into a luxury resort that included golf courses, horseback riding stables, beach houses and bungalows.
