Moline is a city in Rock Island County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Quad Cities area. Moline is one of the Quad Cities, along with neighboring Rock Island, Illinois; East Moline, Illinois; and the Iowa cities of Davenport and Bettendorf. It is situated on the Mississippi River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 76,478. The city’s website identifies Moline as “the birthplace of Route 66.”
The Quad Cities Metropolitan Area is also a part of the greater Chicago metropolitan area. The region has a population estimate of 381,342 (2015), which is nearly one-third of the state’s population. The Moline Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population estimated at 177,362 (2009).
Moline was founded by William B. Power and his brother John in 1834 as a planned community on land owned by the American Fur Company. It was named for their sponsoring partner, Josephine Molineux Graham (née Molineaux) from New York City.
