Peoria is a city in Illinois, and is the principal city of the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city was home to 115,007 people. It is the county seat of Peoria County.
In 1680, Peoria was established as a French trading post at what is now the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. It was named after a local tribe called the Peoria. The original village of Peoria was abandoned in 1826, but was re-established in 1829 by settlers from Fort Clark and other settlements on the Illinois River. In 1833 it became county seat of Peoria County due to its central location.
Peoria’s location along major transportation routes made it an ideal spot for industry; in fact, during much of its history it was known as “The Crossroads of America.” Today it remains a center for agriculture and manufacturing, including food processing and metal fabrication.
