Cedar Falls is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 16,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Cedar Falls was founded by George D. Rorer (1821–1889) when he constructed a sawmill in 1849 on a waterfall of the Cedar River above its junction with the Wapsipinicon River. Cedar Falls has been home to several colleges and universities over the years. In 1882, Edward Payson Powell moved his Illinois Wesleyan University from Bluffs (now Wheaton) to Cedar Falls and renamed it Black Hawk College. The college changed its name to Black Hawk State University in 1923 and joined the state university system as Northern Iowa State College in 1958. In 1967, it merged with another former state teachers’ college in Mason City to become Northern Iowa University.
