Council Bluffs, Iowa is a city located in Pottawattamie County on the eastern side of the Missouri River. It is situated along the Iowa/Nebraska border, with Omaha to its west and Des Moines to its east. The city’s population was about 56,500 people as of 2017.
The town was founded in 1846 by Silas and Mary K. Smith and named for their son Council Bluffs, who was killed in the Mexican War. The first settlers began arriving in 1849, and Council Bluffs became an incorporated city in 1851. Its first mayor was Jesse Lowe.
In 1857, Council Bluffs was connected to other communities by railroad when the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company constructed a line through Iowa via Plattsmouth, Nebraska. This allowed Council Bluffs’ population to grow rapidly from 693 people to nearly 2,000 over just two years (1856-58).
Since then, Council Bluffs has grown steadily with an economy based mostly on manufacturing and distribution industries such as food processing plants (e.g., ConAgra Foods), warehouses/distribution centers (e.g., Walmart), and transportation equipment manufacturing plants (e.g., International Truck & Engine).
