Mason City, Iowa is a city located in the state of Iowa. The city’s population was 37,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cerro Gordo County and a major commercial center for North Central Iowa. Mason City is located in Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, a nationally recognized natural environment.

The community was named for Major General James Mason, who was killed during the Civil War. In 1854, a railroad line was built through the area and by 1856 it had been incorporated as a city. In 1858, Mason City was named as the temporary capital of Iowa; however, because of its close proximity to Minnesota and Illinois, the capital was moved to Des Moines later that year. In 1886, William Larrabee established a newspaper called The Mason City Globe, which existed until 1924 when it merged with another newspaper called The Daily Times-Tribune (which had been established in 1889).

In 1963, Mason City became home to one of the first Habitat for Humanity homes built in North America; it has since been declared an historic site by both Habitat for Humanity International and the State Historical Society of Iowa.
