Urbandale is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 62,521 at the 2010 census. Urbandale is the second-largest city in Polk County, behind West Des Moines.

The area that would become Urbandale was originally platted as “Harrison” in 1838 by James C. Harrisons Company of Dubuque and consisted of 160 acres. In 1856, Urbandale Township was organized by act of the Iowa General Assembly and included all of what is now known as West Des Moines eastward to Colfax (then known as Redfield) and northward to Clive. The first railroad arrived in 1864 with the completion of a line from Des Moines to Grinnell; however it wasn’t until 1914 that a direct connection from Des Moines to Clive was completed with a spur from Johnston (later purchased by B & O Railroad). This spur operated until 1976 when it was abandoned due to low traffic levels.
