Emporia is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. It is the county seat of Lyon County and also the most populous city in the Wakarusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 24,793. Emporia lies between Topeka and Wichita at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and U.S. Highway 400. Emporia is also located at the western edge of the Flint Hills region of Kansas known for its hills, lakes and streams, which are used for recreation including fishing, hunting and boating.

The first settlers in what would become Emporia arrived from eastern states such as Pennsylvania and Virginia in 1858-59 and were led by Judge J.D. Hunter and David Bird (or Burd). They were seeking better opportunities for their families than those offered by farming in Ohio and Illinois, where many had been born. The first group established a community called Huntersville close to Indian Creek, near its intersection with Pottawatomie Creek in what would become Lyon County.[3] After this settlement was abandoned because of constant flooding, a second community was established on higher ground along Indian Creek 10 miles away; it became known as “New Hope”.
