Garden City is a city in Finney County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 17,821. It is the county seat of Finney County.
The area was first settled in 1876 and incorporated as a city in 1906. It is known as the “Jewel of the Plains”, and its motto is “Where life makes sense.” Garden City was founded by colonists who left Topeka because of its reputation as a rough cowtown.
Garden City’s economy was originally based on cattle trade: it is located at the confluence of several major trails for cattle drives from Texas to railroads elsewhere in Kansas and beyond. Later, it became a major wheat shipping point. The town’s large stockyards were built by Waggoner Cattle Company in 1909. Today the stockyards are gone and much of the site has been redeveloped into commercial buildings and light industry, with only one historic building remaining at 10th Street and Broadway Avenue (Dodge House).
