Junction City is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Geary County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 18,876. The combined statistical area including Junction City, nearby Salina and Fort Riley had an estimated population of 107,887 in 2013.

Junction City was named by Union Pacific Railroad officials in 1864 because it was at a railroad junction where the Union Pacific main line met the branch line to Fort Riley (established by troops under General Winfield Scott during their march to Utah). The city was founded as a waystation between Fort Riley and western settlements. It had been used as a base for hunting bison and deer by Native Americans for centuries before its founding.

In 1867, William W. Bertch, a German immigrant who had come to America with his parents when he was seven years old, purchased 640 acres (259 ha) from John Wanser for $1 per acre ($3/ha). He built a log home on his land and opened a trading post to supply travelers with food, lodging and other supplies needed for their journeys across the plains of Kansas and Nebraska to western destinations such as Oregon or California.
