Leavenworth, Kansas is a small town with a population of around 9,000 people. It’s located in the southeast corner of Kansas, and it’s also close to both Missouri and Oklahoma.
Leavenworth was founded in 1857. The town got its name from Capt. Henry Leavenworth, who was stationed at Fort Leavenworth during the Civil War. He had previously served in the Mexican War and was known as an excellent officer.
The history of Leavenworth is filled with violence and conflict. In 1865, a group of soldiers from the Union army destroyed most of the town because they believed that some residents were helping Confederate soldiers escape from prison camps in Missouri. In 1890, another group of soldiers burned down parts of the city after it became clear that locals had been stealing from nearby ranches and farms.
Today, Leavenworth is known for its historic downtown area, which includes many buildings built before 1900. The city also has several museums documenting its past and current residents’ contributions to society—including one dedicated entirely to former President Dwight D Eisenhower (who spent time there during World War II).
