The first known inhabitants were American Indians who lived along the Santa Fe Trail and in the area that became known as Wyandotte County. In 1831 this area was claimed for France by Jean Baptiste Chouteau and his brothers, who were trappers for the American Fur Company based out of St Louis, Missouri. This claim was made under French royal authority, however it was not recognized by Spanish authorities or other European explorers who visited this area over the next few years
