Salina, Kansas is a city in the state of Kansas. It is the county seat of Saline County. The population was 46,828 at the 2010 census.
Salina was founded in 1858 on the south bank of Salt Creek and incorporated on November 3, 1869. The city derives its name from Princess Salina, daughter of King David Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani (1851–1882).
The first post office in Saline County was established in March 1860 at Old Fort Wayne (Saline County), three miles north of present-day Salina, due to a lack of residents within the county. The fort, built in 1855 by settlers fleeing the violence of Bleeding Kansas, was named for General Anthony Wayne. Three years later, on May 28, 1863, the post office name was changed to Salina.
In 1884, Salina City became an independent municipal government and remained so until it merged with surrounding Salt Creek Township to form a single city government in 1930. In 1917 and 1918 Salina became a center of national media attention when it passed ordinances that banned “the uttering of any profane or obscene language on any public street or highway.”
