The Bowling Green Assembly Plant opened in 1995 with a workforce of 5,000 employees. In 2004, General Motors announced that it would be closing this plant at the end of 2005 as part of its 2005 annual report on October 31 that year. This decision was made despite assurances from GM officials that no such action would be taken because of strong vehicle sales in the Bowling Green market. This move cost 2,500 jobs at this plant and 2,500 more jobs throughout the supply chain. The plant closed on November 14, 2005 when its final product rolled off the assembly line.
