The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was part of the territory ceded to Spain by France in 1763. In 1811, two years before Louisiana became a state, Lafayette Parish was formed and named after Marquis de Lafayette. The first post office opened in 1812 under the name “Cypremort”.
