Lake Charles is a city in the southwestern portion of Louisiana, in the United States. It is located on the upper end of Calcasieu Lake, which is part of the Gulf of Mexico drainage basin. The city is located within the Houston-Southeast Texas metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Lake Charles had a population of 71,743.
Lake Charles is known as the “Sportsman’s Paradise” because of its well-known recreational opportunities and its location by several bodies of water, including Lake Charles and Calcasieu Lake.
The city has been home to the Calcasieu Ship Channel since even before it was completed in 1932, when it was created as a navigation channel for ships carrying crude oil from nearby oilfields to refineries in Beaumont, Texas. With this designation came business and industrial development which grew throughout World War II and after as more people moved into the cities and towns surrounding Lake Charles. The city has been nicknamed “the Hub City” because of its central location among other significant cities in southwest Louisiana such as Lafayette (approximately 40 miles northeast) and Alexandria (approximately 60 miles east).
