Shreveport is a city in northwestern Louisiana. It is the county seat of Caddo Parish and extends from the delta of the Red River to where that river flows into the Mississippi River.

The city was founded in 1836 by Shreveport businessman, Andrew Jackson Hunter, on land that he purchased from the Caddo Indians. It became a major center for cotton, rice and sugar cane production as well as a regional transportation hub with rail links to Dallas and New Orleans. In 1839, Shreveport was incorporated after being chosen as the parish seat of Caddo Parish. The city grew in population throughout most of the 19th century.

Shreveport is also known for its role in ending slavery in America by being one of the few places where Union forces were able to win a victory over Confederate troops during the Civil War (Battle of Mansfield). It was also near here that Confederate General Tom Green was killed in battle.

In the early part of the 20th century, Shreveport experienced rapid growth and prosperity due to its booming oil and gas industry. This ended when oil production declined during the Great Depression and World War II brought about an economic boom for war industries
