Annapolis is the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland, as well as the county seat of Anne Arundel County. It’s located on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, south of Baltimore and about 30 miles east of Washington, D.C.
Annapolis has a long history as a center for politics and government in Maryland. It was established in 1649 by George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore and founder of the Colony of Maryland, who sought to establish a capital city near his family’s home at New Castle. Calvert named it after his wife Anne Arundel—the daughter of Lord Baltimore’s friend and fellow member of England’s House of Lords—to honor her birth month (June).
The city served as the capital of Maryland until 1708, when that role passed to nearby St. Mary’s City, which had been founded by Leonard Calvert in 1634. In 1768 Annapolis became part of Harford County; in 1838 it was returned to Anne Arundel County and in 1851 became an independent city again.
