Gaithersburg is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is located 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Washington, D.C., and is considered a suburb of the capital. The city’s population was 61,217 at the 2010 U.S. Census.

The city was incorporated in 1878 and is named after David Gaither, who purchased a farm there in 1805 and founded a town called Gaither’s Addition or Gaither’s Village in 1873. He later served as lieutenant colonel in the United States Army during the Civil War and helped to organize combat regiments for African Americans to serve in the war effort. The town grew rapidly from its founding until it was incorporated as Gaithersburg in 1878; however, growth slowed after that with only 800 residents by 1900. In 1908, Gaithersburg was selected by the United States Census Bureau as one of ten places where new census enumerators would be trained for work on the 1910 census; however, it did not become a permanent Census Bureau training center until 1940 due to World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1945).
