Glen Burnie is a city in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It is named after the Glen Burnie farm estate of Colonel William Duckett, who originally settled there. The population was 58,766 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore metropolitan area and its southern suburbs.

The area that is now Glen Burnie was purchased by Colonel William Duckett in 1733 from David Thompson, who had patented it in 1729. It was originally known as “Ducketts Retreat”. In the 19th century, it became a summer resort for wealthy families from Baltimore and Washington D.C., who built many summer homes there (including those at the historic Glen Burnie Historic District). In 1872, the Baltimore and Annapolis Short Line Railroad completed construction of a rail line between Baltimore and Annapolis. The line ran through what would later become Glen Burnie and opened up the area for further development. In 1873, Charles Ridgely of Hampton’s Beach bought much of present-day downtown Glen Burnie and began selling off lots to developers; this is when Glen Burnie began to take shape as a town with its own identity.
