Hanover, Maryland is a town in Anne Arundel County. The population was 10,553 at the 2010 census.

The area was originally named “Harmony” by its first postmaster, William Conolly, who came from Harmony, Pennsylvania. In 1827, the post office was renamed to Hanover after Hanover Street in Philadelphia (now known as Market Street), where Conolly had lived before moving to Maryland. The town was incorporated in 1876.

In 1889, the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad built a railroad bridge across the Severn River and laid tracks through Hanover on its way to meet with an extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad line from Washington D.C. In 1895, a second railroad bridge was constructed across the river and a station stop established there which became known as “Severna Park”. The community continued to be called “Hanover” until 1993 when it was renamed “Severna Park.” Cheap Car Rentals Lexington Park

In 1996, after being closed for over 15 years due to flood damage, one of the bridges reopened as part of a new bike path along the riverfront.
