Waldorf, Maryland is a city in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The population was 34,934 at the 2010 United States Census. It is named for Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts.

Waldorf began as an agricultural settlement in 1742 when William Waldorf and his brother Leonard began acquiring land in the area that would eventually become the city of Waldorf. Only a few years after the first settlers arrived, they were joined by Benjamin Tasker, Sr., who built a home to display his wealth at the corner of what are now Crain Highway (Route 5) and Old Washington Road (Route 301). In 1873, when the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad was built through the area now known as Waldorf, James Juggan purchased land and built a hotel called Juggan’s Hotel. The town was incorporated in 1893. The City of Waldorf experienced tremendous growth during World War II due to its proximity to Andrews Air Force Base (now Joint Base Andrews). Many workers moved into the community to work at the base or one of its many munitions plants; others came from Washington D.C., Baltimore and even New York City just to shop in Waldorf’s many retail stores.
