Auburn is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 19,663 at the 2010 census. Auburn is part of the Worcester metropolitan area and home to several colleges, including Quinsigamond Community College and Assumption College.

Auburn’s roots date back to 1653 when it was founded as a part of Harvard University’s land grant. The name was selected by General James Leonard, who named it after his birthplace in Warwick, New York. It was first settled by European colonists in 1716 as part of Sutton District (now Sutton). The district separated from Sutton and became the town of Auburn in 1795.

Auburn played an important role in the American Civil War when it served as a training ground for soldiers before they went off to war. In 1864, the town was raided by 1,500 Confederate cavalrymen who burned the railroad depot and stole horses from residents’ farms. Auburn has since recovered from this incident with new industries and businesses growing within its boundaries.
