Dedham, Massachusetts was originally part of a tract of land called Wessaguscus, which was granted to the Puritans in 1636 by the Massachusetts General Court. The town was officially incorporated in 1637, and the name Dedham was chosen because it was believed to be derived from the English town of Dedham, Essex.

The settlement’s first settlers were John Winthrop, who founded Harvard University in nearby Cambridge, Massachusetts; Henry Dunster (who would become America’s first college president), who founded Harvard College; and John Eliot (who would become America’s first native minister).
