Norwood, Massachusetts is a small town in the Greater Boston area. It is situated in Norfolk County and lies on the border of Norfolk’s two districts: Dedham and Westwood. The town is bordered by the towns of Needham, Dover, Medfield, Millis, Norfolk, Walpole and Sharon.
Norwood, Massachusetts is a suburb of Boston that has been home to many notable Americans throughout its history. The town was founded in 1858 by Henry W. Foster, who was a wealthy merchant and one of the first settlers in the area. He named it after his birthplace in England, Norwood, Suffolk County.
In September 1894, the town’s first train station was built at Hamilton Street and Glenwood Avenue. Passenger trains stopped at this station until March 4th, 1958 when service ended due to declining ridership and rising expenses. The building still stands today as a private residence and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Norwood Historical Society was established in 1887 by local historian Sarah Loring Bailey to preserve Norwood’s history for future generations.
The town has long been known for its historic architecture: many homes were built before 1900 using Victorian-style designs such as gables, porches and turrets (though some have since been renovated).
