Peabody, Massachusetts is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Greater Boston area. The population was 51,271 at the 2010 census. Peabody was incorporated as a city in 1877.
Peabody was first settled in the 1650s by people who had traveled up the Mystic River from Lynn and Salem. These settlers were Puritans, or religious people who believed that their way of life and beliefs should be regulated by their religious leaders. They were also called Pilgrims because they had fled to Holland to escape persecution in England and then moved to America when they were told that they could practice their religion freely here.
The Puritans’ first settlement was not in Peabody but a few miles north, in what is now Danvers, Massachusetts. The original town was named Saugus for a Native American tribe that lived nearby; later, it would be renamed Salem after another Native American tribe’s name for the area: “place where two rivers meet.”
When the Pilgrims moved inland from the coastline in 1654 and began growing corn on land cleared from forests, they needed more workers than just themselves. They invited French Huguenots fleeing persecution at home to join them—and these people were skilled farmers who knew how to use horses instead of oxen as draft animals for plowing fields.
