Woburn, Massachusetts is a historic town that was incorporated in 1640. It’s located about 20 miles north of Boston, and has been a part of the Greater Boston area for over 300 years. The town takes its name from the Woburn family, who were among the first settlers in the area.
The first industry in Woburn was leather tanning, which began in 1640. A few years later, shipbuilding became an important industry—the town was home to one of the largest shipyards on the East Coast at one time. The town also had several mills, which produced textiles and paper products.
The first public school was built in 1797—it was an all-girls school operated by Mrs. Joseph Richardson under a grant from her father’s estate. Today, there are numerous public schools located throughout Woburn that serve all grades K-12; these include elementary schools such as John Fitch Elementary School (1890), middle schools such as John Fitch Middle School (1890), and high schools such as Woburn High School (1929).
