Worcester, Massachusetts is a city in the central part of the state, located on the Connecticut River. It is one of the oldest cities in New England, and it was one of the first to be settled by Europeans when they arrived in America. The city was founded by Puritans who had left England to escape religious persecution.
In 1675, during King Philip’s War (1675–76), an attack on Worcester by Native Americans led to the burning down of most of the town’s buildings. The city was rebuilt and continued to thrive until 1774 when it was attacked again during King George’s War (1744–48). This time the entire town was destroyed and its residents were forced to relocate once more.
The city recovered quickly from these setbacks and prospered through the years that followed. Today it has a population of around 180,000 people and is considered one of Massachusetts’ largest cities.
