Calumet is a city in Houghton County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,062 at the 2010 census. The city is located within Keweenaw County but is politically independent. It is part of the Copper Country region of the Upper Peninsula.
The city was established in 1873 and named for the Calumet River, which runs through it. Calumet was incorporated as a village in 1890 and as a city in 1897.
Calumet has been a regional center for mining and smelting since the 19th century. The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company (1864–1902) had extensive holdings in the area and was one of the largest copper mining operations in the United States during its time; it later became Hecla Mining Company (1902–2007), then Rio Tinto Group’s Kennecott Minerals Company (2007–present).
The Michigan Smelter Stack, built by Calumet and Hecla Mining Company in 1895 to process lead ore from its nearby mines, was once one of the tallest structures on earth and remains an icon of the region despite its partial collapse in 1960 due to corrosion of its internal structure after being abandoned by its owners 20 years.
