Flint, Michigan is a city in the United States. It is located in Genesee County, about 50 miles north of Detroit. Flint was founded by lumber baron and Michigan state senator Jacob Smith in 1819. The city got its name from the Flint River, which flows through the center of the city.
Flint’s history as a lumber town began with the construction of a dam on the Flint River in 1819, which allowed logs to be floated to nearby saw mills. In 1847, Jacob Smith built a sawmill on the bank of the Flint River and founded what would become the city of Flint. By 1860, Smith had built a dam and mill pond on what is now known as Mill Street; this area would later become downtown Flint. By 1894, there were numerous lumber mills in operation at one time or another; some of these included Leland & Gray Lumber Company and John Dibley Lumber Company (now known as Dibley Building Materials).
In 1856, a group of residents founded a high school called Flint High School: first public institution in Michigan to offer secondary education for females. In 1889, Genesee College (now University) was established by former Governor Austin Blair.
