Lansing is the capital of Michigan and the only state capital in the United States that does not have a Washington D.C.-based sister city. The city’s population is approximately 114,000 (2015 estimate), making it the second most populous city in Michigan. Lansing’s location on the Grand River makes it an important gateway to Michigan’s “Thumb” region.

The site of what would become Lansing was originally home to Native Americans known as the Anishinaabe or Chippewa. The first European settler to live in the area was George Hunter (1710-1780), who purchased land near present-day Lansing in 1772. He built a cabin there and lived with his family until 1779 when he moved to Detroit.

In 1809, the U.S. government authorized a land office in this area to sell land ceded by Native American tribes who were being displaced by white settlers moving into their territory from Ohio and Pennsylvania; two years later, a settlement called “Wyoming” was established here as part of Michigan Territory.
