Marquette is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Marquette County. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census. The city is located on Lake Superior’s southern shoreline. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, known primarily for shipping iron ore, taconite (a low-grade iron ore) and other bulk minerals of the western Upper Peninsula; it is also one of the Great Lakes’ largest recreational boat harbors and a popular fishing destination.
The city was founded in 1822 by John Johnston as “McKittrick”. Johnston had been sent by Colonel Samuel H. Walker on an expedition to find a suitable site for fur trading operations for his employer, Henry Schoolcraft’s Indian Trading Post. Early Native American inhabitants referred to it as “Dog Head” because of a rock formation along the lake shore that resembled a dog’s head.
In 1851, Father Bernard Rene Menard, who had been commissioned by Archbishop Frederic Baraga, founded St. James Catholic Church and established a mission to minister to Catholics among the French-speaking inhabitants in what is now the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
