Muskegon, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Muskegon River. The city’s population was estimated to be 38,194 in 2018.
The area surrounding present-day Muskegon was inhabited by various indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The first European settlers arrived in 1835 and established a village named “Muskegon” after its Native American name, mshkigwena, meaning “end of the waters.” By 1837, settlers had platted the village and established a post office with the name “Muskegon.” In 1838, Stephen Foster traveled through Muskegon County and wrote his song entitled “My Old Kentucky Home.” He described it as a place where “there are no slaves to chide me”—a theme common in many songs of that time period.
In 1839, Muskegon was incorporated as a village; by 1850 it had grown to become an important lumbering town that supported 86 sawmills producing 400 million board feet (1 million m³) of lumber annually; 100 ships were also built each year at its shipyards.
