Portage, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is a suburb of Kalamazoo. The population was 26,884 at the 2010 census. Portage is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area and Kalamazoo-Portage Core Based Statistical Area.

The first European settlers arrived in what is now Portage Township in 1829, but it wasn’t until February 2, 1831 that the first plat for the village of Portage (named after the Indian portage from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron) was registered by Judge Augustus Buel on behalf of John A. Mott, who had purchased land from local Native Americans just two years before. In 1837, a post office was established by Oscar Scott but closed down three years later in 1840. In that same year, a second post office opened under the name “Portageville.” This last name would remain unchanged until it closed down in 1900 due to lack of use.
