Southfield is a city in Oakland County of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a northern suburb of Detroit and part of the Downriver area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 71,719 and it is the 28th largest city in Michigan by population, as well as the second largest city in Oakland County.

Southfield was settled in 1819 when Lewis Cass and his wife, Mary Hunt, purchased land from Mr. Ephraim Beach and named it “South Field.” The settlement became known as “Cass” or “Cass Farm” until incorporated in 1925 with the name Southfield, which was chosen to honor Lewis Cass.
