Minnesota is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. Minnesota was carved out of the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory and admitted to the union as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. The name “Minnesota” comes from a Dakota word for “sky-tinted water”, or “cloudy water”.
Minnesota is known for its lakes, forests, and wilderness areas; its northern forests are home to about 60% of the nation’s surviving old growth forest. The state has a large number of lakes, from large swamps with wetlands and trees to more than 10,000 lakes (about 8% of all lakes in the United States). The largest lake is Lake Superior; at 31,700 square miles (82,100 km2), it is larger than all but one lake in Canada (Lake Huron) and is only surpassed by Lake Baikal in Russia and Caspian Sea.
The state’s nickname comes from its flag which depicts a pine tree on a blue background; this refers to the many tall pine trees growing throughout Minnesota. The state motto is L’Étoile du Nord or “The Star of the North” in French.
