Mississippi is a U.S. state located in the Southern United States. The state’s name comes from the Mississippi River, which forms its western border. The river was named after the Ojibwe word misi-ziibi (“Great River”). The state is divided into 82 counties and contains approximately 41,000 square miles (105,000 km2) of land, including coastal marshlands and beaches, lakes and rivers.
The area that is now Mississippi was acquired from France in the Louisiana Purchase, although parts of it had already been claimed by Spain as part of West Florida under the Adams–Onís Treaty. In 1817, Congress declared that all land west of the Pearl River between the 23rd and 26th parallels was part of Alabama Territory until 1820; this area was later organized as Mississippi Territory in 1817, but it did not become a state until 1821.
The new state adopted the name for the river in 1820. In 1861, Mississippi became the second state to declare its secession from the Union and join others in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida to form the Confederate States of America (the first being Texas).
