Gulfport, Mississippi is a coastal city in the southern part of the United States. It’s located in Harrison County, Mississippi and is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 67,098 at the 2010 census.
The area was first inhabited by Native Americans. In 1816, the Spanish claimed this land as part of their colony of West Florida. In 1817, they built a fort on what is now known as Fort Bayou near present-day Gulfport.
In 1821, Spain returned this territory to Mexico and Biloxi became part of the United States when it gained independence from Spain in 1821. It remained under Mexican rule until 1823 when it became part of Mississippi Territory.
In 1890, Biloxi was incorporated as a city and in 1905, it became an important port for shipping cotton and lumber out of Louisiana before Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 causing widespread damage throughout the region including Biloxi where some areas were completely destroyed due to flooding caused by high winds bringing water upriver from Mobile Bay into New Orleans via Lake Pontchartrain near Interstate 10 which caused major flooding there too due to levee failure along canals leading
