Tupelo, Mississippi is a city in the state of Mississippi. It was named after the Tupelo tree and is located in Lee County. The population of Tupelo is estimated to be around 37,000 people, as of 2014.
Tupelo was founded in 1835 by James White and John Robison. It was originally named “Big Lick Creek” but changed its name to “Tupelo” when railroad tracks were laid through town. The first post office was established there in 1837. In 1844 the city was incorporated as a town and in 1855 it became county seat for Lee County.
In addition to being home to Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion (which attracts more than 600,000 visitors annually), Tupelo has also been visited by other notable musicians such as Johnny Cash and B.B. King.
