Chesterfield is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 21,868 at the 2010 census. Chesterfield is one of several municipalities that make up the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area and is located about 12 miles (19 km) east of Clayton and about 10 miles (16 km) west of Richmond Heights.
Chesterfield was first settled in 1805 by James Fenton and Samuel Archer who bought land from the United States government. Chesterfield was named after Chesterfield County, Virginia by John C. Calhoun’s secretary, John Wylie Crawford.
In 1820, Chesterfield became a township with a population of 450 people. In 1856, the village of Manchester was incorporated within the township. Chesterfield became an independent municipality in 1876; at that time it had a population of 1,200 people.
The Village of Chesterfield Hills was incorporated on January 2, 1924. In 1955, the Village of Chesterfield Woods was incorporated. On July 1, 2006, both villages were annexed by the city of Chesterfield.
