Clayton is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri. It is a suburb of St. Louis. The population was 10,049 at the 2010 census.

Clayton was originally called “Clayton Junction.” Its name originated from its location at the junction of two railroads: one line ran north-south, and the other east-west. A post office called Clayton Junction was established in 1850, and the name was changed to Clayton in 1882. The community has been known as “High Town” since at least 1867.

The town grew around a tavern established by Henry Shaw on his vast estate that stretched westward to what is now Brentwood Boulevard. Shaw’s heirs later formed the Town of Clayton Inc., which developed the town further westward and northward with residential subdivisions along the railroads and commercial areas along Brentwood Boulevard and Interstate 170 (Chippewa Street).
