North Platte is a city in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 7,913 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln County and is located on the North Platte River.
North Platte was established in 1868 along the Union Pacific Railroad line west from Omaha, Nebraska. The town was founded by local landowner William A. Hamilton and railroad magnate Thomas C. Durant. It was named after the North Platte River that runs through it, which in turn was named for its resemblance to the Ohio River in Ohio (the name “Ohio” itself derives from an Iroquoian word meaning “good river”).
The city experienced its first growth spurt in 1872 when it became a stop on the Kearney-Black Hills Trail, a major cattle drive trail that ran north-south through eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. By 1873, it had become an important rest stop for travelers driving westward on the trail or eastward overland along the Oregon Trail via Fort Fetterman at Douglas, Wyoming (now merged into Douglas).
